Trupanion Review

Updated January 4, 2015 by

What’s Covered?

Trupanion’s medical insurance policy for cats and dogs covers veterinary costs associated with injury or illness. Only one core policy type is offered. It covers 90% of veterinary costs related to diagnostic testing, surgeries, medications, treatment, hospitalization, supplements, therapeutic pet foods, orthotic devices, prosthetic devices, and carts, less the exam fee. Specific plan details differ based on your location. One variation of the plan has been tailored for residents of California and Washington, while the other covers all other states, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Trupanion offers “no limits coverage”. This means that you have unlimited coverage for your pet with no payout limits per claim, per year, or over the life of your pet.

Additional Coverage Options:

  1. “Recovery and Complementary Care Rider” – This optional package provides coverage for the following alternative care treatments:
    • Rehabilitative therapy
    • Acupuncture
    • Hydrotherapy
    • Chiropractic
    • Behavioral modification and therapy
    • Homeopathy
    • Naturopathy
  2. “Pet Owner Assistance Package” – This optional package is tailored for you the owner.  It offers the following types of coverage:
    • Liability coverage for third-party property damage
    • Advertising and reward
    • Boarding fees if you become hospitalized
    • Vacation cancellation costs
    • Cremation or burial fees
  3. “Breeding Rider” – Covers illnesses and injuries relating to breeding, whelping, and queening.

What’s Not Covered?

Trupanion does not provide coverage for:

  • veterinary examination or office visit fees
  • pre-existing conditions,
  • all routine and wellness (No coverage available in plans or as a rider)
  • dental diseases (only extractions and reconstructions may be covered under specific conditions)
  • preventative care
  • diseases preventable by vaccines and prophylactic medications (e.g., roundworms and fleas).
  • Prostate problems, hormonal skin problems, testicular tumors, perianal tumors, mammary tumors, uterine and ovarian conditions, birthing, or injury due to fighting, collision with a motor vehicle or agressive behavior are excluded unless pet is spayed or neutered prior to age 1 or within 30 days of adoption

Routine care is any treatment that is considered to be part of the everyday care that your pet requires.
